What is Functional Neurology?
Dr. Ala Lysyk Smith and Dr. Kelly Smith
As brain health experts, we help manage chronic and seemingly unsolvable neurological and health conditions with a brain-based functional neurology approach.
By looking at how brain function intersects with other systems in the body, we can begin to unravel complex health conditions and understand how best to assist with your care.
Functional Chiropractic Neurology is a sub-specialty of Chiropractic.
As Chiropractic Neurologists we are licensed chiropractors who have completed an additional 3+ years of study in neurology including academic and clinical training and passed a rigorous written and practical certification examination, given by the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (ACNB).
GETTING YOUR LIFE BACK
My journey started out as a regular day for a 12 year old boy. I was playing in a hockey game when an unfortunate hit laid me on the ice.
I was carted off by ambulance and the next thing I remember was waking up in the hospital. I was diagnosed with a concussion and whip-lash. The doctor discharged me and told me to go home and be on brain rest. My head hurt so bad I was in a quiet dark room for over a week.
So, my mom took me to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, where more tests were done and lots of different medicine was tried. Over the next few years I had many different types of pain, knee pain which made me wheel chair bound for a while, headaches, and back pain. No one was able to diagnosis this pain.
Many doctors gave me medicine, which did nothing for me, so we went to several other doctors, a total of 17 doctors and none of them knew what do for me. Each doctor had a different diagnosis, one even told me I was faking it and didn’t believe me.
After being exhausted of seeing doctors, four years after my concussion my mom took me to see Dr. Ala. Dr. Ala did many tests on my knees and then figured out the leg pain was still a symptom of my concussion. After careful examination she knew what she needed to do to get my life back.
Along with Dr. Ala and my family, we traveled to see Dr. Carrick in Atlanta GA. There he finally diagnosed me with a traumatic bilateral brain injury (TBI) from my concussion. We did many brain and eye exercises to make my brain work properly.
I still have a long way to go be 100% but because of Dr. Ala and Dr. Carrick, I am now a 17 year old a junior in high school with hopes of graduating with my class and then going onto college and playing baseball. I can’t thank them enough for giving me my life back!!
